The star enters the video call and at once launches into an excuse. “Oh my God – I’m sorry!” she exclaims, appearing truly regretful. Despite being only a couple of minutes delayed, she wants to justify. “I tend to talk too much during calls. “Previous discussions went over, and I realized I talk too much!” Luckily, for a writer, that’s precisely what is ideal to encounter. Besides, it’s fairly unsurprising. Anyone who have seen her unapologetically openly gay and outspoken movie titled Bottoms—that she penned with the director and appeared in together with her friend Ayo Edebiri—will already know that Sennott possesses a lot to say, whether on identity, sex, or the merits of starting a teen combat group. Plus, once you finish her new multi-episode HBO series titled I Love LA, it becomes obvious that the star holds even more insights on the challenges of Gen Z life (Now in her thirties, Sennott is a bridge of the gang, a tale-end millennial adept for bridging millennials and Gen Z).

Influences and Artistic Direction

The comparisons to Lena Dunham’s groundbreaking show naturally arise and Sennott is enthusiastic, citing it together with Sex and the City, Issa Rae’s show and the innovative program as guides for I Love LA, which follows the struggles of online personality Tallulah and her friend who is also new agent portrayed by Sennott. However, the largest spot on concept belonged to the popular sitcom, the program about an up-and-coming celebrity succeeding in a gritty LA scene (notable statement: “nobody’s happy in this town except for the losers”). She discovered it during COVID-19, became “hooked”, and chose to add a fresh perspective on it “with female and queer audiences in mind”.

“I wanted to make a show where the internet, not Hollywood, was the industry, because my career started online,” she says. The idea for this project emerged—in part—from her own, at first difficult, move to Los Angeles and from her saturn return, a frequently discussed event for astrology heads. That period marked a phase that involved her grasp some big insights, in her career and in private life. “My twenties began with constant public emotional outbursts and disorganization,” she admits. “Settling in LA during my mid-twenties brought calm, but soon everything unraveled.” “It resembled a series of extreme challenges…”

Starting Out

Brought up in Connecticut, Sennott began creating and acting humor while studying performance at New York University (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts. “I went through all the proper channels to try to perform, and they weren’t gelling,” she explains. “I tried out for all the NYU comedy groups, and got rejected from all of them. I tried out for all the NYU plays and didn’t make it into any of them. “I wondered why I was even there at all.”

Sennott seized control, appearing at amateur nights with Edebiri and sharing hilarious (and very) weird online content digitally. One, titled Baby Cult, followed characters intensely obsessed with having babies; a different one imagined working at a trendy retail outlet as akin to being caught in a scary movie. By chance, she encountered Seligman through NYU’s movie community and eventually starring in her initial project, Shiva Baby, a stressful film set at a funeral gathering with hints of Uncut Gems. The big theme of her journey, she notes, has been contemporaries offering opportunities, as opposed to established gatekeepers. So the old guard wasn’t helpful? “Not the gatekeepers”, she emphasizes, adding with a laugh: “They don’t want us to win.”

Manifesting Dreams

Those who questioned about her earlier will likely be regretting it today. As part of she labels a “wild, full-circle” story, she has created her dream vehicle. Previously she posted content called about Los Angeles on the internet, in which she parodied movie previews (“Substance abuse is rampant here”). Six years on, she’s a lead creator (with the co-writer) of a show about city dwellers juggling the perks of digital stardom (such as partying at a celebrity’s house) with downsides (your friend being accused of being a substance-abusing stealer, and perhaps becoming a risky outcast). Some could easy to produce a program about digital influence that was extremely idealized—or, more problematic, one that belittled at those depicted. This show does neither, creating a representation of affluent twentysomething life that’s frank about the grot and the shine.

“There have been a lot of shows that depict young people and their relationship to the internet in this very condescending, hateful way,” she says. “I think that young people have been through a lot – I’m mostly thinking of people younger than me, like my little sister, who went to college during Covid, so she had to come home, or my other sister who was doing school online.”|“The younger generation has faced significant
