The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
