Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
