Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
